Clothing Texture Artist
Contract Work – Clothing Texture Artist
Shikigami Games makes fashion games. Cute fashion games. Sort of malevolent fashion games. But still fashion games. Fashion games require a lot of art – shirts, dresses, capes, prison tattoos, garter belts, chaps, wings, chain mail, that one mustache the guy in the Village People had, stuff like that. And we need someone to draw that art. This is a cartoony game and the dolls are small, so the clothes are relatively simple, at times even flood filled, although for many you’ll need to know how to draw wrinkles, shadows and occasionally even apply fabric patterns. But that’s not the hard part. This is the hard part – we need a LOT of art. Our current asset list calls for 197 outfits made out of 566 different clothing items. We’ve already finished a couple hundred but that still leaves us 396 belts, shoes, piercings, etc. And that’s why we need more texture artists. The Technical Details: We have a 2k poly 3D model with three skins (body, pants, dresses). Some clothes are separate models (hats, shoes, hair and facial hair), the rest are textures applied to the model. You’ll be using Photoshop to color in a 512x512 unwrap. The unwrap was designed to make it easy to create clothes. From a technical perspective, this shouldn’t be hard. The Money: After trying this many different ways, here’s what we think will work: Clothes are divided into small sets (10 dresses, 15 t-shirts, etc.). You pick a set, we give you some notes and creative license, you complete the set in one week or less, you test the clothes in the game to make sure they work, you send us the clothes, we say “hey, that’s pretty good”, we send you a check for $100 and you pick a new set to work on. Simple clothes can be done in a couple of minutes (socks and simple tshirts for example). More complex clothes (e.g., wedding gowns) might take an hour or more. Our goal is for each set to take 10 hours, which means 10-20 items per set. In theory we could work with dozens of artists but we’ve learned from experience that we can’t keep a consistent art style that way. Given how much work we have, we prefer to work with people who can spend 20 or more hours per week. Want to work a lot more? Great! Just make sure you also get your school work done (we prefer A students). We’re willing to work with groups so long as the group leader can keep the group’s art style consistent. The Application: You don’t need to fill out a form, show us your transcript or send in a resume, but you do need to convince us you can draw in our art style, so there’s going to be a little test. For the test, we’ll give you a list of clothes, a PSD of the unwraps, some of our existing clothes, a scaled down version of the game and instructions on how to add your textures to the game. Pick three items off the list, do art magic, test them in the game and, when you’re satisfied, send them to us. Include a note explaining how much time you’ll have available to work on this and how long you think a set of 10 clothes will take you. We’ll pick the best two or three artists and send everyone else a note saying either “we’re sorry, you’re good but we picked someone else” or “we’re sorry, you’re not very good, I hope you at least have a good personality”. To apply, ask questions or tell funny jokes, email the project manager at info@shikigamigames.com. Unlike some companies, we respond to every (non-spam) email we get, even the really bad ones. And we're normally (though not always) pretty fast, so if you don't hear back from us, something has one wrong and you should bug us some more. We’d like to make a decision by September 1st so if you’re interested, apply now! |
